With school out for the summer, sixty-four Gross Catholic High School students have new financial knowledge in their back pocket — and a new perspective about money. This last semester, Omaha FCU began sponsoring Gross’ “Foundations in Personal Finance” curriculum by Ramsey Solutions. Funded by OFCU, the lessons are taught to several grade levels by Gross teachers. OFCU President Chris Byous relayed that “this partnership with Gross allows us to reach out into the community, and to Gross specifically, to provide trusted and comprehensive financial education and wellness. We feel in-depth money management skills are an extremely important part to having the opportunity to strive for, achieve and maintain financial focus and success.”

Gross students feel fortunate to be taught these lessons, as one Gross student said, “A monthly budget will help me to save more and create a future plan for not only my money, but my life. Budgeting can help me set aside money to achieve that goal.”

Another Gross student who recently completed the program pointed out, “Long-term consequences of not learning how to save at a young age are that you would possibly experience late retirement or just not have enough money in the future.”

Currently, Gross students are taught three separate modules, each with 13 chapters including multiple lessons. The content covers such aspects as budgeting basics, credit and debt, income and taxes, college planning, global economics and the like.

According to founder Dave Ramsey, this critical work is worth doing, as he said, “You’re rewriting history one student at a time — and that is work that matters.”

Byous agrees wholeheartedly, adding, “It is our hope that this fundamental financial education for our area youth will translate and manifest throughout their adulthood, and give these students hope that they can reach and maintain financial freedom if they persevere, remain vigilant, pay themselves first, and stay disciplined with their money.”

Ramsey Solutions was founded by Dave Ramsey, a nationally syndicated radio host that has taught millions of his listeners about how to manage their money well. The curriculum was created “so that students can learn the right way to handle money before they graduate high school.”

Coming Soon: An added bonus to the Ramsey Solutions program is that we will soon be unveiling the entire suite of modules, chapters and lessons on our website within the Resources menu tab. This is a complimentary offer to our entire membership, as well as to virtual website visitors, to provide the opportunity to brush up on their financial skills as well as learn new ways to manage their money.
